The young Nepalese fashion designer Prabal Gurung has been courted by the world’s top style magazines and won plaudits for his creations from some of Hollywood’s best-known actresses.

But it was not until Michelle Obama attended a function wearing a dress he designed that his parents, who live in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu, finally believed he had made it.

“My mom had always kind of brushed off my success. She would say, ‘Talk to me when Michelle Obama wears one of your designs,’” Gurung, who lives in New York, told AFP during a recent visit to his native Nepal.

“She was the first person I called when I heard the news.”

Gurung, who will not give his exact age but is in his 30s, is one of the hottest young fashion designers in New York.

Demi Moore has tweeted his praises, Rachel Weisz appeared on the red carpet wearing one of his dresses, and the hugely influential editor of American Vogue, Anna Wintour, has given him her backing.

But in Nepal, where making clothes is seen as menial work for women and people from low castes, he is rarely even recognised. (more…)

The designer of the new Biggest Loser fashion line has accused the fashion industry of peddling double standards when it comes to celebrating womanly curves.

Bruno Schiavi’s Jupi Corporation announced in May its appointment as the official designer and distributer of the Biggest Loser Apparel Range, a spin-off of the hit TV series, with the US network NBC.

The Australian lingerie designer says the industry is being hypocritical in supporting plus-sized models on the catwalk while neglecting larger women at retail level.

Schiavi says there is still a massive gap for plus-size women who want to look fashionable.

“It really irks me … when designers go out there and say ‘yes we are behind plus size’ and yet their collections are never made for a large size, it’s really a double standard,” Schiavi says.

Men in Britain hear the call - it’s time to cast aside that smelly World Cup T-shirt and slip into something more stylish.

British men are notorious for looking worse and spending less on their wardrobes than their European counterparts. An event that could soon change all that is the first London Men’s Fashion Week.

The three day trade fair offers international buyers and journalists a sneak preview of the spring and summer collections from the some of the best British designers. - reports BBC.

Serious business

While Paris Milan and New York have long held menswear shows separate from the glittering, high powered world of women’s fashion, this is the first time that London has been treated to such a glamour-fest.

But are British men really ready for the challenge? According to designers, retailers and fashion pundits the Brit bloke’s much maligned sense of style is steadily improving.

Senior fashion editor at the men’s magazine Arena, Tamara Fulton, says that men have spent much time and money getting in touch with their sartorial side over the last decade.

“Definitely, without a doubt, men are now more interested in fashion - you just have to look at the growth in men’s lifestyle magazines.”

She said that a special twice yearly edition of Arena solely devoted to men’s fashion, has had an “absolutely fantastic response.”

GQ magazine, the glossy title which has become a byword for a certain type of square-jawed chic, also says that stylish men are now a force to be reckoned with. Publishing Director Peter Stuart said: “Today men’s fashion is taken as seriously as women’s. It is therefore a natural step for a London Fashion Week for Men to be created.” (more…)

Sandra Bullock is set to make her first public appearance since husband Jesse James’ infidelity scandal made headlines. While she has remained under the radar, raising her newly-adopted son, Louis, she plans to hit the red carpet on June 6 for the MTV Movie Awards. On Wednesday, she was named the recipient of the MTV Generation Award “for her riveting and diverse contributions to the film industry,” and her rep confirms to PEOPLE, “she will be attending.”

The ‘Blind Side’ actress will be the first female recipient honored with the Generation Award, which acknowledges an actor who has engaged the MTV audience throughout their career.

“Sandra is one of those rare individuals who is adored by our audience as both an actress and a role model,” said Stephen Friedman, general manager of MTV. “Recognizing her remarkable talent, amazing range of films and her visceral connection to our audience around the globe, we are honored to present her with our MTV Generation Award.” (more…)

Michael Lohan is hitting back at daughter Lindsay Lohan’s allegations that he was behind the alleged theft of the actress’ passport in Cannes, France.

On Thursday afternoon, Michael Lohan issued a statement to Access Hollywood through his attorney, Lisa Bloom, shooting down his daughter’s remarks to Us Magazine, claiming he was behind the disappearance of her passport.

“It’s a very sad, and of course, untrue, allegation,” Michael Lohan said through his attorney in a statement. “Because Michael has been pushing for her to go to rehab, Lindsay has become angry at him, blaming him for her problems. Michael wishes Lindsay the best regardless of what she may say about him, and stands ready, willing and able to help her at any time.” - reports MSNBC.

The actress had been ordered to appear at a progress report hearing in Los Angeles on Thursday, but claimed she couldn’t board a flight because she lost her passport. Later, she claimed her dad, Michael, was behind the theft. (more…)

Magical types like dwarves, pixies, gnomes and Nicolas Sarkozy are all rejoicing after hearing the news that ‘meels’ (man heels) are this summer’s hottest look, according to one of our favourite fashion blogs, Refinery29.com. The blog recently ran a rather wonderful photo story on men in heels with street-style pictures from fashion week season, including one of a guy hailing a taxi outside the Rodarte show wearing a pair of stupendous boots with a platform sole and a gravity-defying non-heel (we suggest you just look for yourself rather than relying on our rather inadequate description).

Of course, if you’re really into fashion and decide to do some research, you won’t have to pore over dusty library books for long before you find mention of men and heels. Renaissance man liked to don a stacked heel along with his powdered wig and beauty spot, and Wikipedia reliably informs us that Mongolian horsemen were among the first to use heels as means to keep their feet from sliding out of their stirrups. Which is probably the only time you’ll hear high heels referred to as practical. (more…)
